A lonely peace
I have in my heart found
a space
for a delicate formation
of words
which may not part
my careful lips,
are they bound together
mute
by my decades
of clumsy speech;
and that essence
left
in this place of longing
is in its kind
a type of lonely peace.

This most beautiful of Aotearoa’s endemic birds was on the verge of extinction when a remnant was moved
to offshore islands.
These became their ark. They are now thriving.
For me, tīeke symbolise regeneration, care and protection,
and hope.
South Island Saddleback

Saddlebackblack is a vehicle for Patrick McLuskie’s first book of poetry.
The writings describe his walk from a spiritually lost place to a position of security and belonging;
held tightly in the arms of the Son of God,
Jesus Christ,
Who walked this earth.

Shepherd's Warning, Shepherd's Delight
Shepherd’s Warning, Shepherd’s Delight is a poetic description of my walk from a lost place, to a place of relationship with God. Raised Catholic, I wandered away from organized Christian faith and became more interested in an abstract connection with a Creator, through Eastern belief and healing systems. While Shepherd’s Warning, Shepherd’s Delight doesn’t directly address these systems, it does give voice to the underlying soul-call that cries out for and seeks a personal relationship with the Living God. Darkness becomes light, becomes life. But the pathways aren’t smooth or idealized. The journey oscillates and there is always the underlying realization of one’s humanity; the very real and flawed part of us that is in such need of a Savior.
Shepherd’s Warning, Shepherd’s Delight ultimately takes on observations of the state of the world and the churches. It assumes that the found faith is rooted in the belief that the Bible is what it claims to be; simply, God’s Word given to us. Hence the title; the Bible as the foundation of our knowledge of faith is both our supreme delight and our greatest test. We are indeed all being warned.

Patrick McLuskie is an ex-military airline pilot working from and living in Christchurch, New Zealand. He was raised Catholic in Upper Hutt then joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force, later pursuing a commercial flying career.
After leaving home, Patrick became secular in outlook. He eventually began to search for God again and became interested in Eastern spiritualties, including Reiki as a healing system as well as reading the Urantia Book for a time.
A family discussion triggered a return to look at the underpinnings of Christianity, this time from a more mature and analytical perspective. To his discomfort, he found the Bible to be sound, logical, and historical. The following years were spent rediscovering his faith in Jesus. Most of his poetry was written in the turbulent period of journeying into Christian faith.

Photography is a hobby that brings me joy. I’ve shared a few photos as part of this website and Instagram link.
I particularly love the black and white medium, but the colours of Uganda simply can’t be supressed.

mission
Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’
Matthew 25:38-40

What a privilege it has been to walk alongside those who have a huge heart for, and a deep reach into Ugandan communities. This has enabled me to serve and to develop relationships with our partners in that most beautiful country. The links to these mission initiatives are included below:
